There are two medical professions that deal with eye care. One is ophthalmology, a branch of medicine, and the other is optometry. Optometry is a science that deals with the structure and function of the eye. Primarily concerned with eye and vision care, an optometrist diagnoses and treats eye problems in the context of vision. Refractive errors and their correction, using lenses and other optical aids come under his jurisdiction. He determines refractive error and prescribes correction. Vision screening (eye testing), orthoptics and vision training, optometric counseling, and designing of spectacles are the tools of an optometrist.
